A black slimy layer of anaerobic bacteria forms naturally where effluent meets soil. A thin biomat is normal and helps treat wastewater. When it thickens past a certain point it seals the trench and water can no longer percolate away.
Stop all non-essential water use immediately — every gallon makes it worse.
Have the tank pumped to remove the solids load feeding the biomat.
Rest the field. If you have a second field or can divert to a holding tank, take the affected field offline for 6–12 months. Biomat digests itself when starved of new effluent.
Fix any leaking fixtures. A single running toilet can add 200 gallons a day and will keep the field permanently saturated.

2. Hydraulic Overload — Too Much Water, Too Fast

Check every toilet for a silent leak: a few drops of food colouring in the cistern, then look in the bowl 20 minutes later without flushing.

3. Solids Carryover from a Neglected Tank
If the tank isn’t pumped, or the outlet baffle and effluent filter have failed, suspended solids flow into the laterals and physically plug the perforations and surrounding gravel. This damage is largely permanent.
Have the tank pumped and both baffles inspected.
Fit an effluent filter if the tank doesn’t have one — it’s the cheapest insurance against field damage there is.
Clean that filter annually thereafter.
Ask the contractor to camera the laterals to gauge how much solid material has already reached them.
Accept that laterals already packed with solids usually need jetting at minimum, replacement at worst.
4. Compaction from Vehicles or Structures
Driving, parking or building over a field compresses the soil, crushes the pipes and destroys the pore structure the system depends on.
Keep all vehicles, trailers, skips and livestock off the field permanently.
Mark the field boundaries with discreet posts so visitors and contractors don’t stray onto it.
Never build a shed, patio, deck or pool over any part of it.
If a crushed lateral is confirmed by camera, that section needs excavating and replacing.

Roots enter through the same perforations meant to release effluent, then fill the pipe.

Mechanical rootering can clear them, but roots return unless the tree goes.

A D-box that has shifted or partially blocked sends most flow into one lateral, overloading and failing it years early while the others sit unused.
Excavate the D-box and lift the lid.
Check whether effluent is standing higher than the outlet pipes.

Some fields fail seasonally rather than permanently — a high water table in spring, or heavy clay that never percolated well to begin with.
Track whether problems correlate with wet seasons or heavy rain. Seasonal failure points to groundwater.
Improve surface drainage — grade soil away from the field, add a curtain drain uphill.
Divert all guttering and downspouts well clear.
Ask your county health department for the original perc test and system design. It will tell you what the soil was rated for.
Chronically high water tables usually need a mound or raised system rather than a conventional field.
8. Simple Old Age
Conventional fields have a design life of 20–30 years. Beyond that, gradual biomat and mineral accumulation eventually wins regardless of how well you’ve maintained it.
