Water Heater Expansion Tank Leaking: Locate the Source
Quick answer: Identify whether an expansion-tank leak comes from the pipe connection, the metal tank body, or the air-valve area. A fitting leak may be repairable; water escaping from a damaged tank body requires tank replacement. Do not patch a pressurized tank.
Keep away from hot surfaces and wet electrical equipment. If the leak is continuing, shut down the water heater and isolate its water supply only as directed by the equipment instructions and only from a safe, dry position. A water-filled expansion tank can be heavy; do not loosen or remove it yourself.
Where does the water start?
| Location | Possible issue | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Threaded pipe connection | Connection, fitting, or water tracking from above | Photograph the first wet spot and ask a plumber to identify the leaking joint. |
| Tank shell or seam | Tank damage or corrosion | Arrange replacement assessment; avoid patching or tightening the tank. |
| Air-valve area | Valve or internal tank problem | Report the location. Do not press the valve as a diagnostic experiment. |
| Heater relief pipe, while expansion tank looks dry | Possible pressure or expansion-control issue | Follow the relief-pipe drip guide. |
What a plumber should check
The replacement should match the application, not just the old tank’s size or color. Domestic potable-water expansion tanks and heating-system expansion tanks are not automatically interchangeable.
- The source of the leak and condition of the connecting pipe.
- Incoming water pressure and any pressure-control problem.
- Tank sizing for the water-heating system.
- Precharge under the manufacturer’s specified conditions.
- Support for the tank’s full weight and the permitted mounting orientation.
- The heater’s relief valve and safe discharge route.
Amtrol’s thermal expansion tank instructions require model-specific installation and checking precharge with the tank isolated and empty of water. A reading taken on an operating system can mislead. Use the instructions supplied with the actual replacement.
Repair the fitting or replace the tank?
Ask the plumber to show where the water originates. A pipe-connection repair is different from replacing a failed tank. If the tank needs replacement, ask whether the quote includes support, compatible fittings, pressure checks, disposal, and a check for continuing relief discharge.
Do not buy a tank solely from a generic shopping link. Record the heater capacity, expansion tank model, installation arrangement, and any recent plumbing changes so the installer can select it correctly.
Can I stop the leak by adding air?
Adding air does not repair a leaking shell or failed component. Precharge is a setup and maintenance measurement under specific conditions, not a trial cure for an active leak.
Can the water heater run without its expansion tank?
Do not bypass an installed expansion tank as a workaround. Have a qualified plumber determine the required expansion control for your system and restore it correctly.
